A celebration of the first English translations of two of the best books by the Nobel Prize-winning French novelist Patrick Modiano: Young Once (trans. Damion Searls) and In the Cafe of Lost Youth (trans. Chris Clarke). In Young Once, an aging couple looks back on a city of crime and secrecy, where two young lovers came together on the Parisian stage. In the Cafe of Lost Youth centers around the mystery and fate of a waiflike woman named Louki, told through the eyes of those who might have known her. Translators Searls and Clarke discuss the style, stories, and legacy of the enigmatic Modiano, known as the “Proust of the Occupation.” Moderated by Mark Polizzotti and co-hosted with NYRB Classics.
